FAQ (FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS)

Q: What is GRMC's current challenge?

A: In this most challenging environment in healthcare's recent history, and with the continuing cuts in state supplemental payment and insurance reimbursements, GRMC is increasingly challenged to earn enough of a profit margin each year to purchase all of the Capital Equipment and Building needs necessary to:

  • replace aging equipment
  • remain current with advances in the medical field
  • recruit and retain highly skilled medical practitioners
  • provide for the equipment and facilities necessary to help our citizens avoid the costs and lost time with traveling long distances for their basic healthcare needs

Q: What is GRMC requesting to help address this challenge?

A: As a Grant County-Owned hospital, GRMC is requesting Grant County community support through the General Election process on November 8th to approve a "4 Mill Property Tax Levy" for four years, for the purposes of supporting some of GRMC's costs related to annual Capital Equipment needs and Building upgrades and renovations.

Like so many other New Mexico Counties have already done, GRMC is asking the citizens of Grant County to please support this Hospital Mill Levy request for your hospital, to keep your high quality care close to home

Q: Is this something new for hospitals in New Mexico?

A: This is not a new idea for hospitals in New Mexico. In fact there are 14 other counties in New Mexico that already provide some form of financial/tax support to their local hospitals.

Q: How much money would a 4 Mill Property Tax Levy contribute to GRMC?

A: A 4 Mill Levy would provide GRMC with approximately $3.3 million a year for four years, while GRMC's expected capital equipment and building upgrades over the next four years are estimated at a cost of approximately $5 million dollars per year.

Q: What does this mean for a typical property owner?

A: As an example, a 4 Mill Property Tax Levy would cost a typical property owner with a $100,000 property approximately $132 yearly which breaks down to $11.00 per month or $66.00 bi-annually, depending on how you pay your property taxes.

Q: What can the citizens expect in return for their support of GRMC's Mill Levy request?

A: For this support of the hospital GRMC will be able to better maintain and upgrade its equipment and facilities to:

  • remain current with advances in the medical field
  • recruit and retain highly skilled medical practitioners
  • to help our citizens avoid the costs and lost time with traveling long distances for their basic healthcare needs
  • all funds received will be strictly allocated for capital equipment and building upgrades only and will be transparently reported to the GRMC Board of Trustees and the Grant County Board of Commissioners

Other key related talking points:

  1. GRMC's mission and commitment is to providing our communities with exceptional quality, patient-centered care, and during these last 3 years, while we have been working extremely hard with our financial turn-around, we have been primarily focusing on improving the quality of care for our patients.
  2. Some of the results of GRMC's focus on quality care are that we were recently awarded a 4 STAR Quality Rating from the Centers of Medicare / Medicaid Services (CMS). GRMC is one of only three hospitals in New Mexico to have received this high of a Quality Rating and this puts GRMC into the top 20% of hospitals across the country with this rating.
  3. GRMC is Grant County's hospital. It exists to serve the healthcare needs of the citizens of Grant County and the surrounding counties to the best of its ability. Our goal is to continue to improve our quality of care and grow the services GRMC provides to our communities in the immediate and long-term future.
