"Cutting Edge" Patient Medication Safety

You don't have to be a large academic medical center to employ the latest technologies that enhance patient safety. Here at Gila Regional two cutting edge technologies are employed to assure our medication system is as safe as possible -Pyxis and bedside medication verification.

Pyxis is an automated dispensing system stocked by pharmacy. As pharmacy reviews and processes a medication order the order is passed to the patient's Pyxis electronic profile. When a nurse accesses the system the medication/s the patient is receiving appears on the screen. The nurse touches the screen and a drawer opens giving the nurse the patient's medication. Pyxis decreases the chance of a nurse selecting the incorrect medication.
When it comes time to administer the medication the nurse will scan the patient's identification band and the medication. If the patient and/or medication are not correct, the system will let the nurse know so an error can be avoided. Having worked at a large academic medical center prior to coming to Gila Regional, Ray Goellner Director of Pharmacy states, "We can be proud of what we have accomplished as we are years ahead of most other hospitals."

Gila Regional Medical Center is working to be the best place to receive care, to work and to practice medicine.
