At GRMC Hospice, volunteers serve as integral members of the team. Medicare requires that volunteer hours consist of 5% of the time spent with hospice patients. Volunteers often serve as respite for caregivers, allowing them to get away and do things like go grocery shopping. They also provide companionship for patients in the form of listening to stories, playing games, or simply sitting quietly with patients. As members of the GRMC Hospice team, volunteers contribute to conversations about care at Interdisciplinary Group (IDG) meetings, offering insights from their time spent with patients and caregivers.
Because of the nature of their work, GRMC Hospice volunteers must complete a twenty hour training program before visiting patients. To join the next class, contact Siri Dharma Khalsa at 574-4934 or skalsa@grmc.org. A new Volunteer Training Class Series beginning soon -- Call 575/574-4934 for details.
