Working at GRMC
At Gila Regional, we believe the satisfaction of our patients and employees are one in the same. Gila Regional is where both employees and patients want to be. Every employee is considered a caregiver, and an important part of our efforts to ensure an exceptional healthcare experience for our patients.
Our goal at Gila Regional is to continually create an environment and hospital experience second to none. This means we must all, regardless of position or rank, take responsibility for ensuring that patients (and visitors) who come here have the most positive experience possible. We must excel in the performance of those things that have served to distinguish Gila Regional over the years: innovative, high quality services; unique, healing environment; Planetree philosophy of care; exceptional customer service; and patient and employee satisfaction.

As a Planetree hospital, Gila Regional subscribes to the philosophy that we can best serve patients and the community by providing the latest in medical technology in a healing, nurturing environment which encourages their involvement and participation.
We work to personalize, humanize and demystify the healthcare experience for patients and their families. We believe in peaceful, comfortable surroundings, warm and supportive caregivers and access to health information and education to help our patients get well faster and stay well longer.
We strive to broaden our collective understanding of the concept of healing, and continue our network’s expansion so that a growing number of patients and caregivers can experience dignity, compassion, and humanity.
Gila Regional is a full service, 68-bed, not-for-profit, county-owned hospital with a medical staff of more than 48 physicians and 700 full time, part-time and per-diem employees. Gila Regional serves the people of southwest New Mexico.
During the years, Gila Regional has been called by different names. It has grown and developed since its beginnings as the Ladies’ Hospital in 1884 but it has always maintained this historical spirit of collaboration, stewardship, and drive for excellence. This spirit is reflected today in GRMC’s patient-centered approach to regional health care.
Employee Programs
Orientation
Each employee of Gila Regional, including service, support, ancillary, nursing, medical and administrative, is required to attend a mandatory two-day orientation program prior to beginning work-related duties at the hospital. In addition to learning the GRMC philosophy as told by the CEO and various department directors, new employees receive an in depth summary of items such as human resources, safety, standard precautions, legal issues, Planetree, as well as being served a sample of the hospital’s spoken menu program.
Wellness Programs
Gila Regional also offers employees many in-house benefits. Our employees are encouraged to take advantage of free chair massages, relaxation sessions, and Well Aware worksite wellness program which includes free smoking cessation classes. Employees are offered a discounted membership of our Billy Casper Wellness Center complete with weight room, cardio equipment, fitness classes, and three heated pools. In addition, our Planetree services not only benefits patients and their families, but staff members as well.
Retreats
All staff are considered caregivers: from nurses to pharmacists, food service to housekeepers, maintenance workers to security personnel. Every staff member attends an full-day Planetree retreat. Here they learn about the Planetree model and experience the world through the eyes of the patient. More than 900 GRMC caregivers, volunteers, and physicians have attended these retreats. By developing an understanding of how frightening and intimidating a hospital stay can be, each staff member identifies what they can personally do to create a healing and nurturing environment.
Star Award
The focus is on human beings caring for other human beings. This includes providing choices and personalized care for patients and families as well as creating an organizational culture that supports and nurtures staff.
Our caregivers receive regular recognition through the hospital's Star Award recognition program. This program has been developed by GRMC’s Planetree Culture & Communication Committee to recognize caregivers who model GRMC Values and Behavioral Standards. The purpose is to reward caregivers who consistently go above and beyond to improve patient/customer satisfaction.
When caregivers are nominated, they receive the ballot that has been filled out in their honor with one of GRMC’s Values or Behavioral Standards indicated. The more ballots a caregiver receives the more a caregiver gets as an award!
The Annual Caregiver Service Awards Gala is held each December to honor caregivers with five or more years of service. The evening is focused on fun and includes a banquet, live entertainment, music and dancing, along with special recognitions.
Professional Development
Gila Regional offers caregivers many opportunities to develop personally and professionally. Caregivers are encouraged to participate in organizational development paths like the Quality New Mexico journey and Planetree committees; Professional and personal development paths through the Nursing Career Ladder program, Scholarship programs, Succession Planning Program, Education Certification programs, SWANK, and the Franklin Covey Leadership Program.
Spot Recognition
Caregivers are also spotlighted for their skill and teamwork. This program recognizes caregivers monthly who show a strong standard of excellence in their work. They are chosen in three areas: clinical, ancillary, and staff. Those spotlighted are interviewed and are featured in the board packets and in the local newspapers.
