In April, Gila Regional Medical Center's Hospice Program gives the "Carmen Gonzalez Volunteer of the Year Award" to one of its volunteers. This year, the recipient is Tillie Montoya of San Lorenzo.
Tillie has been a dedicated volunteer at GRMC Hospice since 2010.
Hospice Volunteers are mandated by Medicare. GRMC offers them an extensive training in the many facets of hospice care. Volunteers not only go into patients' homes but also help with a variety of outreach and public education programs.
"Tillie Montoya epitomizes the spirit of volunteerism," says Siri Dharma Khalsa, the Hospice Volunteer Coordinator. "She dedicates hours to GRMC's Hospice program projects, including Light Up a Life and the Prayer Flag project, she attends meetings faithfully, and gives valuable input and advice. And I understand that she also volunteers for a variety of care-giving and community needs in the Mimbres Valley, especially at the Senior Center," she added.
GRMC Hospice allows people to die in the place they know with the people they love, and our volunteers are a big part of making that happen. Tillie's familiarity with so many people in Mimbres and San Lorenzo, in combination with her Hospice training and experience, makes Tillie an excellent volunteer.
"We're proud of the team of volunteers we have, and we're especially happy to be able to acknowledge Tillie in this way," Khalsa said.
