The Surgical Center's History
In 2006, GRMC's Surgical Center of the Southwest expanded with a 8,000-square-foot
addition. Surgical services now contains six state-of-the-art operating
rooms, six pre-op rooms, a Cysto room and a separate admitting area for
surgical patients.
The hospital currently hosts more than 4,600 procedures a year, with two-thirds
of them being ambulatory surgeries with no overnight stay required.
"By connecting the surgical addition with our existing surgical suite,
we are able to provide patients all the customer service of a new ambulatory
surgery center with the backup of a full service hospital,"Judy Gould,
RN, GRMC's director of surgery stated.
GRMC was the first hospital in New Mexico to offer
navigated knee surgery. This procedure makes it possible for people to have knee replacement
surgery with a minimal amount of pain, sutures and a less recovery time.
The surgical center offers other procedures that can are facilitated by
the specialized equipment such as eye surgeries, colonoscopies and endometrial
ablation (an alternative to traditional hysterectomies).
All surgical patients are admitted through the Surgical Center of the Southwest
streamlining the process.
